  APPLICATION
  GUIDELINES

Surface Preparation
Be sure the area to be treated is clean and free of dust, particles, leaves, etc.  The surface can be damp or wet however avoid pooled or standing wager - brush/blow the excess water away; woodSteel will float on the surface and not bond.  Immediate rainfall will not affect woodSteel once applied even if not cured.

Softwood vs Hardwood

WoodSteel is formulated for and works best on porous softwoods such as pine as opposed to hardwoods such as oak.  With the exception of cabinets, trim, bookshelves and stairs, most building materials use softwoods.  Hard surface woods will use less product and are less absorbentPressure treated wood is generally one of the species of yellow pine and thus is a softwood.  Pressure treated wood that is still "wet" and not fully cured will may require a longer  drying time.

Application Guidelines

Always wear plastic gloves and protective eye-wear when applying the product.  Always test in a small, inconspicuous area and let dry; woodSteel may slightly darken some woods and composite wood materials.   It normally will not darken painted surfaces but always test a small area first.
Apply
an even coat using a low-pressure chemical resistant sprayer or a paint brush.  When applied to a dry surface, the surface will appear "wet" initially and then will "disappear" as it dries.
A small amount of WoodSteel will  normally go a long way but coverage is determined by the porosity of the wood.  Some woods have areas of both hard and porous surfaces.  On hard surfaces one coat is sufficient.  Use enough to wet the surface without creating drips, puddles or run-down.  A hard surface will stay wet and take longer to dry.  On porous wood surfaces a second  application may be required as there is more surface area and stronger absorption.

Edges
Cut edges should be treated where ever possible prior to assembly of a project - deck, stairs, porch railing, etc.  Wood edges are extremely porous and are a literal freeway for water entry and accumulation. If not possible to treat prior to assembly, be sure to thoroughly treat the joint on all sides.

Additional Coats
Although water will bead on the surface after the first coat has cured, some porous (weathered - aged wood) will be better protected if an additional coat(s) are applied.  Additional coats will provide more thorough coverage and deeper penetration.  Absorbent, porous surfaces display rapid penetration into the wood or substrate.

Additional Coats Continued
Apply a second coat to porous surface after the prior coat has been absorbed into the wood and the prior application ino longer appears wet.  Apply the second coat as soon as the first coat has been absorbed.  IMPORTANT. Applying product over treated, cured area may create viscous milky colored pools of un-reacted product that may take up to 48 hours to dry and will leave milky white residue on the surface - if unsure if the product has cured or if it has been longer than ten minutes and it is a humid day, test on a small area before applying to the entire area.
If re-applying to an area previously treated (weeks, months, years prior) always test a small area for absorption before applying to the entire area.
.
Do not apply a second or multiple applications to  hard surface woods without testing.  WoodSteel is formulated for porous woods.  Non-porous , hard woods are less absorbent and can cause pooling on the surface.  Should this occur wipe of excess product with an absorbent cloth or paper towel.

Drying Time
WoodSteel will be absorbed into the wood in minutes and under normal conditions will dry/cure in 20- 30 minutes or less. Drying time may be extended or shortened depending on the temperature and humidity. Once cured full water repellency is developed.  As curing continues, normal color will return to the surface.

Temperature/Humidity
Do not apply if the air temperature is below 50 degrees.  If the relative humidity is below 50% immediately mist or lightly spray water over the treated area.  Applying WoodSteel over a wet or damp surface will not affect the curing process and in low humidity ares will hasten curing.

General
Wear protective plastic gloves and protective eye-ware when applying the product.  Avoid contact with skin, wash with soap and water to remove.
Cleaning - use isopropyl alcohol to clean sprayers, pour a small amount in sprayer, run though sprayer, simply allow brush to dry.
